After the initial period of British and French colonization, four major waves (or peaks) of immigration and settlement of non-aboriginal peoples took place over a period of almost two centuries. The fifth wave is currently ongoing.

4 Categories of Immigrants in Canada

1. Family Class - They are closely related to residents living in Canada.
2. Economic Immigrants - Skilled workers and business people
3. Others - People accepted as Canadian immigrants or for humanitarian reasons.
4. Refugee - They are people that escapes persecution from their country
